- FLAMMABILITY RATING of Bevlex Bundles
- During the installation of Bevlex beverage transfer
products, questions often arise regarding the building regulations relating to
flammability.
Food grade polyethylene tubing and hose
incorporating an EVA jacket are flammable by nature. Use of flame-retardant
additives are not allowed under the FDA-CFR Title 21 for food contact articles. If
ignited, these products will burn and melt.
PVC hoses and tubing, and PVC coated beverage
bundles are self-extinguishing. Although they will burn when exposed to a flame
source, they will self-extinguish when the flame source is removed. These products
satisfy the requirements of the Underwriters Laboratories standards UL94HB (horizontal
burn) and UL94V-0 (vertical burn-maximum 10 seconds). When installed in exposed
locations such as under a bar counter these performance ratings are sufficient.
When the beverage transfer product is installed in a
concealed space between a ceiling and floor, or a ceiling and roof, much more severe
flammability restrictions may apply. It is the responsibility of the contractor
installing the hoses and tubes to ensure that all local federal building codes are
satisfied.
The most restrictive application involves a
concealed space used as a return air plenum. All materials must be
"non-combustible" having a maximum flame-spread rating of 25 and smoke developed
classification of not more than 50. It must be noted that none of the Bevlex
products (tubing, hose or bundles) will satisfy this requirement.
Whenever a "non-combustible" rating is
needed, the product must be installed inside a conduit, duct, or other enclosure built of
non-combustible material (dry wall, metal conduit, flexible metal ducting etc.).
The test methods often used to define
"non-combustible" materials are ASTM E84 in the USA and CAN/ULC S102.2 in
Canada. Both involve testing of surface burning characteristics and use a
"Steiner Tunnel". Without suitable external protection, the Bevlex
products will not satisfy the flame spread and smoke development ratings of 25 and 50
respectively.
